Dog and Cat Information

Cats: As of October 10, 2023 the city has repealed the licensing of cats.

Dogs:   As of December 2023 Juneau County Registers all dogs in the City.  The City of Mauston Ordinance Article II 8-24 requires that all dogs over the age of five (5) months be licensed with the with the Juneau County Clerk’s Office. In order to obtain such a license, you are required to present the County Clerk with a copy of the dog/cat’s current Rabies Vaccination Certificate, and pay a licensing fee of $12.00 if your dog has been spayed/neutered, and $15.00 if he/she has not.  Pursuant to Wis. Stat. 174.05(4) and (5):

"License year. The license year commences on January 1 and ends on the following December 31.
Late fees. The collecting official shall assess and collect a late fee of $15 from every owner of a dog 5 months of age or over, if the owner failed to obtain a license prior to April 1 of each year, or within 30 days of acquiring ownership of a licensable dog or if the owner failed to obtain a license on or before the dog reached licensable age. All late fees received or collected shall be paid into the local treasury as revenue of the town, village or city in which the license was issued."
 

Dogs and cats are permitted to be kept in the city subject to the following limitations:

(1)   Dogs. The maximum number of dogs which may be kept at a dwelling containing one dwelling unit is two, and the maximum number of dogs which may be kept at a dwelling containing two or more dwelling units is one dog per dwelling unit.

(2)   Cats. The maximum number of cats which may be kept at a dwelling containing one dwelling unit is three, and the maximum number of cats which may be kept at a dwelling containing two or more dwelling units is one cat per dwelling unit.
