This dam, built in 1842, powered a saw mill owned by M. M. Maughs. The lake formed behind the dam is Lake Decorah, named after a prominent Ho-Chunk family in the area. The mill was destroyed in a fire in 1864 and later rebuilt in another location by Benjamin Boorman.

Park entry fee is $5 per car, and it’s worth it to see the bluffs and little caves along the shore of Castle Rock Lake.  Park at the beach.  Make sure the ice is safe and thick!  Take a left from the beach to see the bluffs along the shore of Castle Rock Lake.  Small caves are accessible on foot when the ice is thick.

10   Launch your canoe at Carl Walter Nelson Wildlife Area to explore some backwaters.              

The 165-acre Nelson property is located on Hwy 12 & 16 just minutes north of Mauston. The property borders the Lemonweir River and has a canoe launch that is open to the public. The public is welcome to explore the nature trails and the river that feeds into Lake Decorah (Mauston). This property was donated to ODF by the Carl W. Nelson Foundation. There is no hunting allowed, and it is great for viewing wildlife. The road for the canoe landing was made possible by a grant from the Greater Mauston Tourism Association. The property consists of 35 tillable acres, 3+ acres of CRP with the rest in river bottom hardwood lands. No hunting is allowed.

10   Take a long hike at the beautiful Bass Hollow County Recreation Area in Lyndon Station off Highway K.

Located 10 miles south of Mauston on County Highway K, this is a 295-acre recreation area offering beautiful views and trails in Wisconsin’s unglaciated “coulee” region. The day-use area has restrooms, playground equipment, and shelters available for rent. The approximately 3-mile trail winds through the hollow. Allow plenty of time if attempting this hike, as the trail has many switchbacks and hilly topography. The trail is open to hiking and horseback riding and has several open water crossings. There is a small open shelter midway through the trail that is available for camping. The property is bordered on the north side by an undeveloped State Natural Area, and an apple orchard near the lower parking area is also open to the public.

10    Take a hike at the Necedah National Wildlife Refuge and count how many species of birds you can see.

Refuge lands are open from sunrise to sunset for approved activities. Not sure where to start? Staff and volunteers at the visitor center share current information on seasonal phenology and the best things to do for the day. Explore the visitor center and then step into nature to soak in the sights and sounds of a wild space that changes daily.   Once part of Glacial Lake Wisconsin, Necedah National Wildlife Refuge is now made up of an ancient, exposed lakebed where shallow surface water streams live into the Great Wisconsin Swamp, historic oak savannas, and sand prairies. Seen for its importance for migratory birds by Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1939, it was set aside for breeding and resident wildlife and for generations of people to enjoy.

Get ready to join us for our 10th Annual Ride to Rock Out the Silence! This is a mile marker year for our chapter, celebrating 10 years of dedication to child abuse awareness. This ride is our largest fundraiser of the year. It funds expenses, allowing us to carry out the mission of supporting children and their families that have fallen victim to child abuse.

For our 10th year you can expect another great ride with two thoughtfully planned out stops located amongst the beautiful hills and curves of Southwest Wisconsin. In true Castle Rockin’ style, we will have a few fun additions to the ride throughout the day.

Registration opens at 9 am and kickstands up promptly at 11 am. Cost for the ride is $25 for a single rider $35 with a passenger. This is the 12th Annual Cowtastic CowMOOnity Event, a fundraiser to benefit the Veterans Memorial Park and raise awareness for local businesses or clubs.  

Cows are on display the month of June at Lions Park in Mauston. Cow pictures will be put on the Juneau County Dairy Promotion Council’s Facebook page for viewers to vote on their favorite.  

The winning cow will earn a $100 cash prize and free sponsorship for the following year and will be displayed in front of the dairy pavilion during the 2025 Juneau County Fair.

Join us for a paddle down the canoe interpretive trail out to the day-use island and back. This is a 3-mile round trip paddle with a ½ mile each way of open water out to the day-use island. Call the park office before each event date BEFORE 3 p.m. Monday, May 19th (For May 21st Event) to let us know you are coming or to rent a kayak if you do not have your own as equipment is limited. Up to 7 single and 4 double kayaks may be available to rent.

This event is recommended for all ages with some experience paddling. An accessible single kayak is available. The open water can be windy at times and has some waves, but it is shallow water most of the way. If the weather is bad, the event will be postponed until the next day (Thursday). If both days have bad weather, the event will be canceled.

Consider bringing: your own kayak/life vest and paddle, water bottle, snacks, lunch, waterproof bag, sandals or waterproof shoes, insect repellent, hat, sunscreen.

The Juneau County Forest dual-use Snowmobile and ATV/UTV Trail located on County Forest Land in Clearfield Township is open for winter ATV/UTV trail riding. This does not extend to ATV/UTV use on snowmobile trails that are on private property.
